Rationale for a Centered Search

1. Common Design Practices
Many content-heavy platforms, such as Wikipedia, YouTube, and Spotify, utilize a prominently positioned, centered search area. This design improves visibility, enhances usability, and enables users to quickly locate and access search functionality, streamlining their navigation experience.

2. XWiki’s Diverse Use Cases
Given the varying scope of XWiki instances, the need for a prominent search feature differs. While smaller to medium-sized instances may not require a centered search, larger instances with deeply nested content hierarchies can greatly benefit from an easily identifiable, central search box. This adjustment can improve user efficiency when locating content.

3. Current Limitations
Although centering the search box is technically feasible today, it often requires custom code and technical expertise. This poses a challenge for users without development skills who wish to optimize their XWiki instance’s search functionality.

Proposed Solution

The proposal introduces a configuration option for a centered search box that requires no coding. This option would be accessible via the Global Administration interface, specifically under the following menu path:

  • Look & Feel → Presentation → Header Section

This placement aligns with existing configuration options and can be adjusted based on team input.

Key Consideration: Preserving Default Behavior

Importantly, this proposal does not alter the default behavior of the search box, which remains positioned on the right side of the header. This ensures that existing setups are unaffected. The new option simply provides additional flexibility for administrators who prefer a centered search design.029e0166413abfd1c24964efa852ee6ff5108c5b.png
